Beastars Season 2 Episode 7 Discussion & Gallery

I wasn’t prepared for Beastars’ episode 7 – at all. First, I didn’t expect that the culprit behind Tama’s death would be unveiled right away. I actually thought that they would just hint that the bear was the culprit and leave it at that. But I guess I was wrong. Not only did they unveiled the mystery that was lurking from episode one in a few minutes, but they even showed us how it is to eat your best friend. I’m not going to lie – the episode hit hard on many levels, and I think the authors are doing a terrific job displaying what animal teenagers would feel if they were intelligent.

But what really shocked me the most was the guy losing his arm. I think the show just changed in that scene. Although Beastars was always a story involving a darker plot, it never had something so gory. Again, the scene was extremely well-executed. But more than the arm, what made a big impression on me were the psychological ramifications that the scene had. Clearly, Beastars is becoming more mature by the day – and I love it!

This episode left me with some questions, though. First, why can animals eat insects? For example, Legoshi says the anteater that they will have an antshake when he gets his arm reattached. I guess insects aren’t intelligent in this world(?) Considering this, I also would like to know how fishes live in this world. Do they live in an underwater city? I guess they need to be intelligent – if not, they would be a good way for some of the carnivores to have a balanced diet without eating meat.

Finally (and probably most important), where are all the strong herbivores? I mean, herbivorous are painted as these fragile things on Beastars. And that’s true, for the most part. I’m pretty sure that if there were elephants, hippopotamuses, gorillas, and other strong herbivores who can defend themselves, other plant-eaters wouldn’t have to turn to carnivores for help.
