Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Episode 23 Discussion & Gallery

From everything I was expecting for Higurashi no Naku ni Gou’s closing arc, something like episode 23 didn’t even cross my mind. Although I enjoyed the episode, I feel that the story is starting to drag a little bit. I know that a sequel for this sequel has already been announced, so I wonder how much longer the Anime will take to wrap things up. Even if the next season has 13 episodes instead of 24, it will still be too many for what needs to be unveiled. In episode 17, Satoko has reached the timeline she wants – Rika wants to stay in the village and live with her best friend for the rest of her life. So, anything from there, the Anime is just showing how Satoko got her powers and why she’s able to remember everything that happened on the other timelines.

Six episodes already seem to be too much. But when episode 23 focuses on Satoko’s uncle and how more people are able to remember their past lives, you start to feel that the Anime could have ended for a while now. I really thought that they were just putting some nice extras in order to finish the story right on episode 24. But now that there’s going to be a second season, that doesn’t seem to be true. And it’s not like the story is catering to its main audience, as the plot has become more of a slice of life kind of thing than a gory, psychological story.

But, well – episode 23 was pretty nice. I liked to see Satoko’s uncle’s journey of redemption. I know what he did was too serious to forget. But the fact that the guy has been killed over and over again does help his case. I mean, if someone would change his ways completely, it would be him. Still, it was a nice detail to show Satoko not being able to physically be with him even when she had set her mind to forgive him. The trauma is there, and it’s going to take a long time to heal.
