Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai Vs. Gotoubun no Hanayome

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai Vs. Gotoubun no Hanayome

Hello everyone and welcome to our shelter!

It seems that harems, where the story is centred in a guy tutoring other girls, are gaining popularity… I mean, last season we had Gotoubun no Hanayome (you can read my FI on that one here), now we have Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (We Never Learn)… Maybe, but just maybe, Bokutachi just saw the green light to get an Anime adaptation because of Gotoubun’s success. But, that’s just a theory of mine.

And, here I am, trying to figure out what I’m going to write about this one! To be honest, there is not much that comes to mind… As most of the Anime coming out this season, I just don’t have strong feelings about Bokutachi. Maybe, it’s just me who is having a creative block, or maybe the Anime coming out are just… Meh? Well, we will never know.

Should I just compare it with Gotoubun? Maybe that’s the easy way to go and, true enough, having such a similar Anime coming out in such a short period, of course, people will compare it… And yes, I know that both original sources, the manga, came out in 2017, which means, probably, nobody is copying anyone 🙂 So, yeah… Let’s do that! (Gotta love reading my thought process lol)

Well, I actually wasn’t really interested in Gotoubun when I watched episode 1. Something that you can see by reading my first episode review. Honestly, the show ended up being more enjoyable than I thought and, by the time I wrote my first impressions (after episode 3) I was sold.

This way, it may happen that Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai will pass through the same process. Nevertheless, let me say that, overall, I preferred episode 1 from Gotoubun no Hanayome.

First of all, we have the main character.  From the bat, Fuutarou is a more interesting character than Nariyuki. Probably because of their background. While Nariyuki decides to accept the tutoring lessons to get a recommendation letter for one of the best universities, Fuutarou is actually doing it to get his family out of debt. Truth enough, both guys have lost one of their parents along the way, and both come from a difficult background. However, I 1000 prefer the comedic approach of Fuutarou who counts to the cent the money is going to spend in lunch compared to the muchi stuff Nariyuki remembers about his father telling him that failing is good.

When it comes to the girls, I also preferred Gotoubun sisters versus the linguistic and mathematics geniuses. From the beginning, it seems that Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai goes for the girls treating the Main Character as some kind of best man living in the World. We have a resemblance of that when Nariyuki has the opportunity to speak alone with both of them. Moreover, the girls are actually eager to learn and to study. On the other hand, the sisters in Gotoubun treat Fuutarou as a nuisance most of the time. And it’s actually kind of refreshing most of the girls going against Fuutarou’s, even when they are not actually the Tsundere type.

Nonetheless, it’s actually an interesting idea to have geniuses wanting to pursue a degree in the opposite they are good at.

Last, but not least, I also prefer the character design of Gotoubun. Don’t know how well I can explain this, but the characters in Bokutachi have a more bland and childish look. In fact, the overall animation has that aspect. Probably, it’s because it’s targetting to a different target compared to Gotoubun. So, in the end, it’s not that is bad, is just I prefer the overall animation from Gotoubun versus Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai.

And, you? Did you watch the first episode of Benkyou ga Dekinai? What are your thoughts on it? Tell me all in the comments!
