Is Tower of God Really That Good?

Is Tower of God Really That Good?

Hello everyone and welcome to our shelter πŸ™‚ With more than 170,000 members on MAL, and a rating of 8 (at the moment of writing this article), Tower of God is one of the most popular Animes debuting in the 2020 Spring Season. Before we dive into my first impressions – I’ve watched four episodes so far – I invite you to visit the gallery I’ve been putting together. It has some nice images to add to your Pinterest or change your laptop wallpaper. I also want to disclaim that I haven’t read the source and, therefore, my opinion is purely as an Anime watcher. We all know that the reading source always has more information than the Anime, but that’s not we’re going for this time around.

Tower of God Synopsis

Tower of God Twenty-Fifth Baam

For the ones who haven’t even read the show’s description, let me tell you what this Anime is all about. The story mainly follows Twenty-Fifth Baam, a boy who, as far as he can remember, lived trapped beneath a mysterious tower. One day, a girl named Rachel appears and they both start living together. She becomes his best (and only friend). One day, she leaves, telling him that she’s going to climb the tower so she can see the stars. Without a second thought, Baam decides to enter as well to find her. What he didn’t realize is that to climb the tower, people need to fight for their lives to pass the instructors’ tests and will be granted a wish when they reach the top.

Great Action, but Slow Story Space

Tower of God episode 1

While I love action, I seriously do, it’s not enough to make me watch an Anime from start to finish. It needs more than just that, and usually, I find myself spiraling to Animes that deliver an interesting story. Well, Tower of God’s story hasn’t evolved that much so far. Besides what has been described above, not much has been told. However, by maintaining a slow story pace and giving away small details of the tower itself as well as the characters who end up being on Baam’s party, the show was able to create some mystery.

For now, Tower of God reminds me of the Hunter exam arc from HunterxHunter. Honestly, I don’t mind since that is still my favorite part of the Anime. Regardless of that, it’s still true that the show was able to catch my curiosity about what the hell is Tower of God, where is everyone coming from, and why Rachel is so eager to climb it.

Of course, fighting trials imply a lot of action, and I have to say that the Anime has been delivering some great scenes so far. It may not be the best action animation I’ve ever seen, but the Anime offers a vast array of powers completely different from each other, which is exciting to watch. Especially in episode four, where we’re able to see different characters fighting each other. Some use magic, others have powerful swords, and others have specific traits such as being as small as a squirrel or three pairs of eyes. All in all, the action has been more than enough to go through the episodes and get excited about watching the next one.

Characters Are Interesting

If well developed, I can see myself falling in love for the main characters of the show – not Rachel, though. Not sure why, but from what I’ve seen so far, she just seems to be the type of character I would hate. But well, probably this may change when we find her true colors and the reasons behind her behavior.

The main characters I’m talking about are the ones who create the main party we’re following for now: Baam, Khun, and Rak. Now, Baam is your cute guy who is way too good spirited for his own good. Khun, on the other hand, seems to have been betrayed in the past, which made him a cunning and suspicious little guy. Their dynamic reminds me (again) of HunterxHunter main characters – Gon and Killua. Although a little different, they do seem to follow the same path where Khun (Killua) is the one who thinks things through and protects Baam (Gon), and Baam’ (Gon’s) heart of gold impacts Khun (Killua) to be a better human being.

Rak is the comic reliever of the party. There’s nothing more to say about him than that he’s a huge reptile that wants to fight the strongest people/weapons available. Not sure if his character is going to be further developed throughout the series (hopefully yes), but it’s a great addition to the Anime that makes the audience laugh here and there with his craziness.

Animation Is Unique

You won’t find the animation “quality” you’re used to nowadays. The characters are (purposely) designed to present flaws, and they have what I would call a more realistic approach while still maintaining the Anime aspects we love so much. It’s unique for sure, and I love it.

I don’t believe they will “improve” this throughout the series. It’s about the style and not quality, because the truth is, the animation is of quality. My reasoning for this is that when I take PrintScreens from Animes to create galleries or add to my Pinterest, I treat the image to look better. I may have to play with the contrast, coloring, and sharpness to make an Anime screenshot to stand out. Not with Tower of God, though. Most of the time, the image by itself is perfectly fine as it is.

Is Tower of God Worth Watching?

If you enjoy watching shounen and action Animes go for it. It’s been a while since I fully appreciated an Anime of these genres, debuting that is. I’m not speaking about older ones that I haven’t watched yet because of the time commitment I will have to undertake to watch the countless episodes already aired. The story seems promising so far, characters are interesting, and animation is good enough to enjoy some nice action scenes. So, what’s there not to love?

What about you? Have you watched Tower of God? What are your thoughts on it? Tell me down below ^^

  1. I like the animation quality and the premise seems cool. It’s why I put it on my watchlist. But it’s so popular I thought to wait it out. The only super popular show I’m obsessed with this season is Fruits Bakset
