Is Dr. Stone Any Good?

Is Dr. Stone Any Good?

Hello everyone and welcome to our shelter! πŸ™‚

Today I’m going to talk what seems to be the most popular Anime debuting this season, Dr. Stone. I have to say that I try to never follow the hyper surrounding Anime. This because I’ll just create high expectations and, more times than not, I will end up disappointed. So, when I started watching episode 1 of Dr. Stone, I didn’t even read the synopsis.

To be honest, I’m glad I didn’t. No other way would I be so amazed and surprised in how this Anime turned out to be.

Dr. Stone Synopsis

Dr. Stone Taiju turning into stone

After 5 years of hiding, Taiju Ooki is finally going to confess his feelings to his loved one. Even if one of his best friends, Senkuu, a master of science, does not believe it.

However, a strange phenomenon happens when he is about to say it. The sky goes green and every human (and birds?) in the World is transformed into stone. And, in stone, they remain through several thousand years. Only 3600 years later, when Nature already reclaimed every trace of civilization, Taiju is able to wake up. Contrary to others, he was able to remain sane by thinking he had to confess his feelings and was lucky enough to not get destroyed as many other bodies around the world did.

The first thing he does is to try to find the girl out. He is able to find her, but more than that, he finds a note written by Senkuu who was able to “wake” up 6 months earlier. Now, together, they will both try to bring civilization to what it was before the ordeal. But, first, they need to understand how to “unstone” everyone else.

A Very Creative Idea

I’ve watched a lot of Anime. Probably, you also have watched a ton. So, it always amazes me when an Anime is able to surprise me. Let’s face it, it’s hard to come up with novel ideas when everything already seems to be created. And, although I don’t mind to see similar settings now and then, I have to say it’s a breather to see such a creative concept such as Dr. Stone.

I would never, in a million years, think about a setting like this one! It’s actually pretty nice to see something so different to come out of the Manga world and enter the Anime industry. The thing about Dr. Stone is that, even if it has some problems with the animation movement, it’s a bit too static, truth is, I’m hooked just to see how this new idea is going to develop.

Moreover, it also makes you think a little bit. Imagine the same thing happened to you. Imagine you woke up 3600 years in the future all by yourself. What kind of devices would you be able to bring in order to speed the process of humanity’s evolution? Of course, we all know (somewhat) how to make a fire, something that would speed the process by a lot.

However, that would get us so far, right? So, it’s actually nice to see Senkuu building so many different devices from our ancestors. And, yes, if you are wondering, everything he creates or talks is accurate. I’m not a scientist, but I looked it up πŸ˜€

Is Dr. Stone Good, Though?

For now, I have to say it’s too soon to give a final impression. However, the first episode was extremely interesting and fun to watch. Nonetheless, I do have some reservations regarding a few aspects of it.

It’s true that the animation is beautiful. Both backgrounds and characters are very well done and with a lot of detail. Still, at the same time, I feel that the animation is too static. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great for pintscreens. But, it’s not great if you just want to watch it. Overall I say that the animation is above average.

Other things that I’m not sure how they are going to develop are the characters and story. Are we just getting a story where civilization is built from scratch, or are we going to get more than that? Are the characters going to stay the same, or are they going to develop?

These are questions that only with time we are able to answer. Nonetheless, I’m not particularly in love with either Taiju or Senkuu. In my opinion, they do not have a lot of depth to them. But, I can be proven wrong.

When it comes to the voice acting, it’s good. But, I just don’t know why, I feel they are too deep for the characters. But, I think it’s something that I just need to get used to.

In the end, I believe Dr. Stone has potential. Hopefully, they will be able to bring us new stuff every episode. And, if they are able to show civilization evolution throughout the years until the present, I’m going to love it. To be honest, I only need that to enjoy it!

What about you? Have you watched Dr. Stone episode 1? Tell me what you thought of it in the comments! πŸ™‚

  1. Welcome back.
I unfortunately did watch the promotional videos for this one and it kind of killed a lot of the excitement of this first episode. Still, it is an intriguing concept and I’m hoping to get more into it as it goes.

    1. Thank you ?
Yeah… This season I’m actually not seeing anything about the Anime. I’ll watch all of them so, I end up not even reading the synopsis. To be honest, it has surprised more than once xD and, until now, always in the positive side. So I think I will continue with this strategy

  2. I avoided as much as possible too and was massively entertained by the opening episode. It obviously helps that I’m a huge fan of post-apocalyptic stories. I can’t wait to see where they go with the story.

    1. I’m with you. I think it’s a very interesting concept to start a post-apocalyptic world. Hopefully they won’t let this brilliant idea to fall apart

  3. I did the opposite and checked out 3 volumes of the manga before the anime debut (which sounds insignificant, but it’s rare for me in an age where I’ve gone legal)…so I added to the hype Karandi has perceived, but I don’t watch PVs most of the time and I wasn’t at Anime Expo (where Crunchyroll apparently had a 1st episode screening and a truck going around, playing the PVs) so I was also shying away from the hype in that sense. From my experience of the manga, Dr Stone takes a while to get going after a few revelations, so I’m just waiting to see what the series will be like when it’s got set-up out of the way.

    1. Ooooh that’s nice to hear! It already has a lot potential and you’re basically saying it’s even getting better! Looking forward to that eheh
