Best Short Ever – Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan

There is always something about Anime shorts that make them bad. 3 Minute episodes always fall flat. The creators always try to go for the fast comedic joke but end up failing the punch-line. Or, you also have the ones who try to create some kind of story with the small time they have in hand and fail miserably. *cof* Vampire Holmes *cof*. However, that’s not Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan is going for.

In fact, it’s hard to say what Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan is! First of all, I wouldn’t call it Anime. Yeah, it’s Japanese and it has an entry in MAL. However, if not for that, I would never say it was an Anime. It’s artistic, oh it is very artistic! But, the animation overall gives me more of a pop side / western vibe than Japanese or Anime.

What is Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan then? Originally, it was a 4-koma manga about the life of the author, a single woman living in Tokyo. It is more into the raw side, the girl presents herself naked most of the time (although not revealing anything too scandalous), and is more adult than your typical Anime. For the Anime adaptation, there will be a different director “hosting” each episode, as the same for the voice actress. Something that I’m actually pretty interested in watching.

Tempo is Everything!

To be honest, the first episode does not really tell you much. It’s more into the random side. But, well… It is 20 minutes so of course, there is not going to have a very strong plot line. The main character just introduces herself and then goes into a rambling about things that happened to her. Basically, what I normally do when I get home and talk with my boyfriend 😀 which ends up to be precisely which she is doing.

The reason why such an episode works so well, it’s because of the pace. There is not a dull moment during the 3 minutes. The scenes were created to go entirely and precisely with the music that you can hear below and basically, without you realizing, 3 minutes passed away. In fact, I watched the episode twice just for the fun of it.

The animation, although not what we normally get, it’s pretty awesome. The part I love the most is when the main character appears dancing, like in a way to pass from a scene to another, and her feet go 100% accurate with the music. It is a nice short! I ended it wanting more.

Of course, the next episode can be completely different since the director is a different one which means he will design the episode to his vision. But, in short, I loved it!

For the more otaku, at the end of the episode, we are presented with an interview with both the director and the main voice actress. During the interview, they explain the vision they had for the episode and how they see this work as an all. Something I really loved, it is always awesome to hear the ideas behind a piece of art.
