Is Kemurikusa Any Good?

Is Kemurikusa Any Good?

Hello everyone and welcome to our place! 🙂

I’m almost done with reviewing every first episode of the Anime shows airing this Winter Season. This means that we are getting to the Anime shows which have not created a strong impact that made me want to review them right away. Well, that’s what happened with Kemurikusa.

After browsing the Internet looking for inspiration to write this post, I found out that Kemurikusa is not perceived as a very good Anime… In fact, it has a score of 5.50 in MAL and 2 stars on Anime-Planet. Something that made me think if the first episode I watched was actually that bad…

To be honest, I have to say the Anime is not great! Kemurikusa is about 3 girls who live in a post-apocalyptic world where water is scarce. By finding a certain tree, the 3 of them were able to gain powers. Rin is able to relish very strong attacks, Rina is able to make copies of herself and, last but not the least, Ritsu is able to send her fox ears using a green net to scout under a considerable radius.

Right in the first episode, a guy, normal human, ends up appearing in the island where the girls are looking for water. Don’t ask me how he appears there because there is no kind of explanation of what happened. In fact, even Wakaba, the guy, does not seem to understand how the hell did he just randomly teleported there.

Moreover, in this post-apocalyptic world, there are also monsters called mushi (gigantic bugs) which attack these girls. To be honest, I’m not sure if this is the reason, but I think they are trying to get the trees’ sap (?) I don’t really know, but I think they somewhat explain it…

So the Beginning is Kind of a Mess, Right?

Kemurikusa mushi

Well, I’m not so sure about that… Yes, it’s true that most of the things happening in the first episode are out of our comprehension. However, I believe the idea of the first episode was to present us this post-apocalyptic world as also our 3 main characters.

In fact, you get an explanation of how these characters get their powers and how important is to get water for the tree. At the same time, you are able to understand that these girls have been doing this for quite a while and that it’s not an easy job. For example, when they talk about how Rina died again, or in this case a version of her. This shows that there have been many times of distress where Rina’s clones have died. In fact, the original Rina has died long ago…

Moreover, I think it was interesting the way they conducted Rina characters’ death during the episode. I mean, Rina dies before the audience knows she is just a clone, which means we actually think she just died right in the first episode. Moreover, Rina is one of those characters that you just like right away and, therefore, I actually felt kind of sad seeing her die so early in the game. Even when I ended up finding out about the clones’ thingy, I still felt bad for the one who died. So, basically, the Anime is able to create sympathy for the characters really quickly.

I Mean, Besides Wakaba

Kemurikusa Wakaba funny

On the other hand, Wakaba is not really a character who shined to me. It’s not that I don’t like him (he is in fact pretty funny), I just don’t really care about him at all. I also think that it would be better if the Anime postponed this guy introduction to episode 2. In fact, the girls only seem to be able to survive because of him which made me wonder how the hell they survived for so long in the first place.

I feel that the time used on his introduction as also his heroic scene would be best invested in showing us more of these 3 characters. It’s true that both Rin and Rina are somewhat well presented. However, the big sister, Ritsu was not so well delivered. Since this show is about the 3 of them, I would prefer to have more of Ritsu and less of Wakaba. At least, for now!

When it comes to the animation, the characters are 3D. Although there are a few movements which seem a little bit off, I have to say that they blend kind of well with the environment surrounding them. Moreover, the mushi are kind of cool. They basically resemble the bugs we have in our World, but mechanic… And huge! However, when it comes to the characters’ design, well, I have to say that they are kind of bland.

Last, but not the least, the audio isn’t great either. The voice acting is not that bad, but the audio itself is not really that good. The same goes for the background music, it has some parts that would benefit having some music.

Final Verdict

Kemurikusa Wakaba cute

Kemurikusa is not great, at all! However, I have to say that is not horrible either. In my opinion, it’s one of those Anime shows that are right there in the middle.

Basically, it’s not the Anime I would recommend to new Anime watchers. In fact, I probably won’t recommend it to intermediate Anime watchers since there are better shows than this one. But, for a veteran, I would say there are worst Anime shows coming out this Winter Season. If sci-fi is your thing and you feel you have watched everything there is, this is a good one to try out!

  1. I was going to check out this show just to see how it was but I ended with too many shows to watch as it was so this one fell through. Reading this, I’m glad I didn’t watch it because it feels like a mediocre show that I don’t think I would have enjoyed.

    1. Well it feels like a mediocre Anime because it IS a mediocre Anime 😀 But, to be fair, it’s not the worst of the season! Though, the overall feeling of this Winter Season is kind of… meh
