Why You Do This To Me Dororo?

Dororo was one of the Anime shows that I was more excited for this Winter season. I never watched the original, but I did watch one of the movie adaptations and I loved it! Although the film quality is discussable, I loved the idea behind it.

Dororo is about a samurai lord who batters with 48 demons. He askes for prosperity for his people and become the country’s leader. In return, he will give anything they want. When his firstborn is… Well… born, although he’s alive, he is born without 48 parts of his body. Basically, he is not able to talk, hear, see, neither he has any of the 4 limbs… Basically, he is only flesh and bone, literally.

The samurai lord does not really care. In fact, for him, it’s a small price to pay for what he asked. I mean, he can always have other children, right? This way, he sends one of the maids to dispose of him. However, he ends up surviving and, due to a lot of prosthetics, he is able to move… And battle.

16 years later, his goal is to kill all the 48 demons and regain all of his body.

Why I’m So Hyper For This Anime

It’s been years since I watched that film. I only watched the first part, so I only know half of the story. Moreover, since it was something that I ended up watching because I ended up crossing it while zapping on the TV, I never knew the actual name of the movie lolol

But, since that day the movie got into my brain and stayed there. I loved the idea and it was actually a very interesting story. So, you can see my happiness when I understand that Dororo was that story! Moreover, it is getting a 2019 Anime adaptation. What can I ask for more? Recycling is not that bad guys! If it means this kind of Animes, it is not bad at all!

I watched the first episode and everything seemed perfect. The animation is more adult, but I knew it was going to be like that from the beginning. I love the feudal era, so of course, I love the environment involving this awesome story. Moreover, it shows darker parts, such as blood well drawn and things like that, which always a positive note to me… Yeah, I’m a gore lover!

Again, everything was going for the best… Until… Dororo itself appeared.

What Is With This Voice Acting?

To be honest, I don’t know who Dororo is. I can’t remember him making an appearance in the movies. However, in the Anime, he does exist. He is an orphan who the samurai (which does not have a name yet) without the 48 body parts encounters. Since the Anime is named from this character, I believe he will be the samurai’s partner and we will be seeing him a lot.

I can’t really talk about the character itself too much. Putting it shortly, at the moment he just seems like a brat! But, my biggest problem is with his voice acting…

I don’t really want to badmouth Riu Suzuki, a voice actress who just entered the game. I mean, this is her second job. However, Dororo’s voice is just… Hmm… without emotion and way too soft for the character? It’s difficult to explain, but it did throw me off a lot during the first episode. To the point of taking me out of the immersion I was having while watching the Anime. It’s one of those things that you just can’t bypass without noticing or thinking about it.

The thing is, Dororo is the only problem. All the other voice acting is actually good. So, it’s a shame that I don’t really like one of the main characters’ voice. I hope this is something that I will get used to and stop thinking about after some episodes in.

But, even though I don’t like this particular voice acting, I’m not saying that I don’t like Suzuki, or that she is plain bad. I believe she is still an amateur and will need some time to feel completely relaxed while doing the voice acting. I hope that she is able to feel that way still working in Dororo. I’m really putting my hopes on her for this one 🙂

In conclusion, overall Dororo delivered everything I wanted and needed. It’s a shame about the voice acting, but I will try my best to accept it and move along. Hopefully in episode 3 or so I will be able to actually hear Dororo without cringing.
