Is Ueno-san wa Bukiyou! Worth Your Time?

Time to write my first impressions of Ueno-san wa Bukiyou! Like all other first impressions I’m writing for the Winter Season, this one is also part of my Ultimate Guide for the 2019 Anime Winter Season. Synopsis

Ueno-san is the president of the sciences club. She is also a genius. Aaaaand, she is in love with her kouhai Tanaka. Being the social awkward she is, instead of just saying she loves Tanaka, Ueno prefers to create all sort of tools in order to find if her feelings are not one-sided. For example, designing a gadget that purifies every liquid into crystal water and as Tanaka to drink her purified pee.

Story

There is really not much more than what is said above in the synopsis. Ueno-san wa Bukiyou! is an Anime where each episode will feature 2 different events. All of the events will involve Ueno showing some sort of gadget she created and try to understand if Tanaka loves her. Of course, it’s always silly and with the objective of making people laugh.

I have to say that, while episode 1 was… Interesting, it did not make me laugh that much (although I can understand why some people could laugh out loud with those scenes). Then, the second one was better and I actually laughed. However, in the third one, I felt they were already recycling ideas, which makes me wonder if the show is not going feel old really quick.

Characters

Actually, Ueno is a funny character to follow. I mean, she is completely unappropriated and probably way too young to have such a perverted mind. Nonetheless, she is the soul of the show and if there is it is funny at all it’s because of her.

However, the rest of the group are just the second plan. At least, in my opinion. I don’t really care about them and they could be completely different characters that I wouldn’t really think much about it. Again, Uenos is tcentertre of the show and actually grabs the attention of the audience… Ok, at least for me it grabs my full attention.

Animation

The animation by itself is pretty average. It’s not over the top or something that will take your respiration away. However, since this is a smaller episode type of thing, completely focused on the comedy and delivering jokes, I don’t really mind.

What is most important in this kind of genre is the right reaction at the right time and place. On this topic, it executes well. It is also full of silly faces which I always love and always make me smile. I think that for the type of the Anime this is and with the objective, the creators have in mind, the animation is good enough.

Audio

Again, since this is a comedic Anime, the most important part is that the audio is able to follow the random things happening and the funny cuts they do. And when I say audio, I’m talking about all the of 3 parts, music, voice acting and sound effects.

Again, Ueno-San is the star. The voice actress is able to completely enter the character and just sound how I would expect her to be. The same goes for Takada, he is neither very bright or energetic, something that you can notice in his voice.

Music and sound effects also work pretty well. What it surprises me the most is how many different songs they have in their score. Normally we always get the same background music when something comic is happening, but not in Ueno-san… Almost all the pieces of music in one episode are different.

Final Verdict

In the technical side, Ueno-San wa Bukiyou! is doing pretty much everything right. However, the premise and the type of comedy is very peculiar, which means it won’t work for everyone. Moreover, it worries me a little bit that they seem to be recycling ideas right on episode 3. This way, I have to stay in the middle ground.

If you like a right in your face, pathetic and silly type of comedy I recommend you to watch it!

If you a little more refined when it comes to comedy and prefer things a little deeper than “Takada, drink my pee!”, then you are better passing this one!

If you don’t like comedy at all… Why are you looking for Ueno-san in the first place? XD Just kidding, basically, don’t watch it! It has nothing more to offer.
