Dandadan Season 2 Review: The Supernatural Comedy That Just Keeps on Giving

Dandadan season 2 is fantastic – and I’m not just saying that because I had the pleasure to see more of Jijij!

Science SARU’s second season continues exactly where we left off, throwing Okarun, Momo, and newcomer Jiji into even more bizarre adventures.

I’ll be honest – I preferred season 1 overall, but season 2 is still incredibly solid. The studio has created something genuinely special that mixes comedy, horror, romance, and action in ways that most anime shows can only dream of.

But is it worth your time? Let me break it down for you.

Dandadan season 2 main information

The story gets (somehow) even weirder

Dandadan season 2 starts right after season 1’s cliffhanger, with Okarun and Momo still trying to get back Okarun’s missing “golden balls”.

This time around, they’re helping Jiji, whose family’s house seems to be haunted by a yokai (and probably one of the scariest things this series has thrown at us so far).

The season mainly focuses on two arcs: the Cursed House and the Evil Eye storyline, plus there’s this late-season shift into kaiju territory that I didn’t see coming.

I’ll be honest with you. Season 1 moved faster, but here things felt slower, and not always in a good way.

Still, Dandadan nails something that most anime completely mess up: mixing genres without it feeling like a Turbo Granny trainwreck. One second you’re laughing at Okarun being awkward, then you’re genuinely sad by some yokai’s heartbreaking backstory, and, before you know it, there’s this amazing action scene happening.

What really makes it work is how Okarun and Momo’s relationship keeps everything grounded. Watching them get closer feels so natural – you actually care about these two beyond just the crazy supernatural stuff happening around them.

Characters you’ll actually care about

Speaking about Okarun and Momo, their relationship developing throughout season 2 was one of my favorite parts.

They feel like real teenagers figuring out their feelings while having this tiny inconvenience of dealing with ghosts and aliens trying to kill them on a regular basis.

Jiji brings something great to the group. He’s really hot I really like his character – he’s got this charm that just works with everyone else.

Dandadan season 2, Jiji being held by Evil Eye

What they did with Evil Eye is also brilliant. It did annoy me in the beginning, but now it’s hilarious to see him when he pops out. Plus, the way the show handles Jiji dealing with the Evil Eye makes for some really compelling moments.

And can we talk about how Dandadan treats its monsters? Even the bad guys get backstories that make you understand them. The series doesn’t just throw scary things at you for shock value – it actually makes you care about these characters.

The only one who still feels a bit repetitive to me is Aira. She’s fine and all, but compared to everyone else bringing fresh energy, her interactions feel kind of predictable (and very annoying).

Animation that blew my mind

Science SARU didn’t just keep up their animation quality from season 1. They made it even better somehow. Every frame looks incredible, whether it’s quiet character moments or those insane supernatural battles.

The fight scenes are absolutely gorgeous.

The way they use color, especially during the psychic battles and supernatural stuff, creates moments that genuinely left me speechless. But it’s not just the big flashy scenes – even the quiet romantic moments between Momo and Okarun are animated beautifully.

Dandadan season 2 Aira funny

My boyfriend and I spent most of the time while watching the anime commenting on the quality of the animation.

What really impressed me is how natural everything feels during normal conversations. When characters move around, make gestures, or react to things, it all looks incredibly human. That attention to detail is what makes great anime stand out from the rest.

The sound design is top-notch, too. The soundtrack matches whatever’s happening perfectly, and the voice acting brings every character to life. Plus, we got the awesome musical exorcism!

Pros & cons

ProsCons
Stunning animation that keeps getting betterPace feels a bit slow compared to season 1
Perfect mix of comedy, romance, and actionAira can be annoying
Complex characters that are 3-dimensionalThe kaiju/mecha stuff at the end might not be for everyone
Amazing sound design and voice work
Creative supernatural battles that are actually engaging
Dandadan pros and cons

Moments that stuck with me

A few scenes from season 2 are going to stay in my head for a long time:

  • When Okarun and Momo held hands in the car: This moment was just so incredibly cute! It’s one of those simple gestures that feels genuine and sweet. You can’t help but smile watching these two awkward teenagers finally having a tender moment together.
  • Jiji’s unexpected Evil Eye transformation: When Jiji transformed into the Evil Eye for the second time and completely destroyed Momo’s house, it was both hilarious and shocking. The way it came out of nowhere made it even funnier – classic Dandadan chaos right there.
  • The musical exorcism episode: Science SARU took what was just a few pages in the manga and turned it into something incredible, complete with original rock songs and a Back to the Future reference. This is the kind of creative adaptation that really shows how much they care about the source material.

What makes Dandadan special

Dandadan has done something pretty rare – it’s got a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for both seasons and has been crushing it on Netflix’s charts worldwide. But the real reason it’s special isn’t the ratings – it’s how the series just does whatever it wants and somehow makes it work.

Most supernatural comedies pick whether they want to be scary OR funny. Dandadan says “why not both?” and throws in romance and action while we’re at it.

The storytelling moves between horror and slice-of-life moments without ever feeling confused about what it wants to be.

Dandadan season 2 Jiji hurt

You could compare it to Mob Psycho 100 with the psychic powers, or Chainsaw Man with the supernatural weirdness (fun fact: Chainsaw Man’s creator actually worked with Dandadan’s creator), but Dandadan has this romantic core that makes everything feel more personal.

Even next to comedy hits like Saiki K or action series like Jujutsu Kaisen, this show just does its own thing.

Who should (and shouldn’t) watch Dandadan season 2

Perfect for:

  • Fans of supernatural comedy
  • People who like romance with their action
  • Animation lovers
  • Anyone wanting character-driven stories
  • Viewers looking for something genuinely different

Maybe skip if you:

  • Hate shows that mix genres
  • Get annoyed by crude humor
  • Need everything explained right away
  • Want traditional battle anime structure
  • Can’t handle body horror stuff

Final thoughts: Is Dandadan season 2 really that good?

Yes, absolutely! Dandadan season 2 proves this series isn’t going anywhere – it’s the real deal.

Season 1 had the job of introducing us to this crazy world, but season 2 shows the series knows exactly what it is and isn’t afraid to lean into it. The animation is still incredible, the characters feel more real than ever, and that genre-mixing thing they do? Still working perfectly.

Sure, some episodes could’ve moved faster, but honestly, that’s such a small complaint when everything else is this good. Season 2 is easily one of the best anime to come out this year so far – definitely one of the best of summer 2025.

When they announced season 3 at the end, I got really excited. If Science SARU keeps this up, Dandadan is going to be one of those shows we remember as defining anime in the 2020s.

Can’t wait to see what they do next!

My rating: 9/10 – A chaotic mess that is beautifully put together.
